Harvest Vintage 2020

2020 began under the banner of a winter without particular criticalities, characterized by mild temperatures and little rainfall, especially snow. The first part of spring was relatively dry and sunny, guaranteeing a homogeneous and early vegetative recovery. The months of March and April passed under the banner of good weather and mild temperatures, with scarce rainfall but with May an unstable climate arrived and a considerable number of rains that lasted until late June. On the one hand, this caused a slowdown in vegetative development, thus exhausting the advantage accumulated at the beginning of spring, and on the other, it allowed for an important and indispensable accumulation of water in the soil. This, combined with the not excessive temperatures of the summer, prevented water stress phenomena but created some difficulties in the agronomic management of the vineyard, above all due to the risk of early fungal attacks favored by the rains in May and June. The summer had an ideal climatic trend without large temperature peaks. The harvest opened earlier than the average of the last few years, on 24 September we began the harvest of the Barbera which immediately gave the impression of having reached an excellent level of maturity not only in terms of sugar but above all in terms of polyphenols and acidity. The result is a full-bodied, pleasantly silky wine. The Nebbiolo was presented for harvesting in optimal conditions. On 26th September we started harvesting the Nebbiolo del Roero for the production of Langhe Nebbiolo and after a 12-day break we continued the harvest with Nebbiolo da Barolo. The sudden changes in temperature between day and night which are notoriously important for a good maturation of Nebbiolo have led to a rapid accumulation of polyphenols and a good tannic maturity. The acidity had a slight drop compared to that considered "normal" probably caused by a slightly shorter vegetative cycle but the roundness of the tannins, the pleasantness of the aromas and a greater readiness to drink benefited from this. In conclusion, I can say that 2020 could be an excellent vintage
